Lembersky was a witness to such events two generations ago. His is a story of courage and the unrelenting pursuit of freedom, told through paintings and drawings that offer a vision of vitality and hope prevailing over violence and despair. His panorama of people and places is communicated in a visual language that evolves from realistic description to symbolic evocation, achieving a heightened expression that reveals unspoken truths. Lembersky was an artist, a teacher, and a champion of creative freedom at a time when non-conformism was persecuted.

Materials Mania at Somerville's Artistan's Asylum

New England Foundation for the Arts - Public Art Discussion
Get ready for some demos! It contains
hundreds of thousands of organisms in every cubic meter, making it as alive as
any soil or water + every breath an intimate xSpecies moment. Such microbes
help form the delicate patterns of snowflakes + provide surface area for the
condensation of water vapour +, thereby, the creation of clouds.

At the workshop, we will uncover the complex science + ecology of ice cream, at
once an emulsion + foam composed of ice crystals, [milk]fat +, vitally, air.
Then, we will make + compare ice cream three ways for taste, texture +
composition: through a traditional slow churn, a liquid nitrogen-aided ‘flash
freeze’ + an ultra-modern molecule-thin pacojet shear. As NASA + 20th.c
engineering offered freeze-dried ice cream to our collective menu, what will
our 21st.c ice-cream futures be?

At the ensuing dinner, in each of 5+ courses, we will encounter vapours, smokes
+ stabilized bubbles, we will ingest air trapped in solids + suspend solids in
air. With the paired potables, we will look deeply into the foamy heads of
craft beers which encapsulate liquid in air + uncover the role of airborne
yeasts + microorganisms which lend unique, local flavour. Originally from the USA, but living and working in Taiwan since going there in 2004 as a Fulbright Scholar artist in residence, Jane will return to the US in late June to begin work on the project. Over the course of a two-week residency at The Distillery Gallery, the artist will create a new series of handmade paper artworks focused on the environmental issue of clean water and urban runoff and pollution of Boston’s waterways. During the residency, Jane will create the artworks and involve the public in open studio sessions. The public is invited to join the artist in making handmade paper and putting the wet newly formed sheets to dry on the metal sidewalk signs found on many Boston corners that say “Don’t Dump – Drains to Boston Harbor” or other Boston waterways.

Open Studio Sessions will be held in the lobby gallery space at the Distillery Building from 10 AM - 12 Noon and from 2PM - 4PM on: June 30, July 1, July 2, July 5, July 6, July 7 and July 8.

An exhibition of the works created during the Distillery Gallery residency, along with related works made in Taipei, Taiwan, on city manhole covers, will open on July 14 and continue through August 13, 2011.

An opening reception and gallery talk by the artist will be Thursday, July 14, 7-9 PM.
